As part of Gas Safety Week 2026, we're reminding residents to take a few simple steps to protect their homes and loved ones from dangers such as gas leaks, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Book your annual gas safety check If you own your home, make sure your gas appliances are checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Regular servicing helps ensure appliances are working safely and efficiently. But staying safe doesn't stop there.
Carbon monoxide: know the risks Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. It is produced when fuels such as gas, oil, coal or wood do not burn properly. It can come from faulty appliances, wood burners, barbecues or generators and can be fatal. Know the warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning: Headaches Dizziness Nausea Unusual tiredness Breathlessness Collapse If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, seek fresh air immediately and get medical help.
Additional home heating safety tips As the colder months approach, remember to: Keep heaters clear of curtains, furniture and other combustible items. Never use petrol or paraffin to start a fire. Avoid drying clothes on or too close to heaters, fires or stoves. Store logs and fuel safely away from heat sources. Use a fire guard to prevent sparks from escaping. Have chimneys professionally swept before the heating season.
